Cruising the 21st Century - Revisiting the Anastasis - Onno Heesbeen 2004
On 24th of August 2004 I revisited the Mercy Ship Anastasis. Last time I had been on the ship was two years ago in Amsterdam. See my article: a look on board mercy ship Anastasis for my first visit to the ship and the history of this old Italian Liner. This time Anastasis docked in the small fishing harbour of Scheveningen. This being a different location I was once again drawn to see and photograph the aging ship. The weather was typically Dutch, much dark clouds and the constant threat of rain, fortunately it stayed dry for the most part of the day and to be honest those dark clouds make a nice contrasting background for pictures.

As I got out of the tram I could already see the stream lined funnel of the Anastasis above the harbour buildings. When I got around a corner the grace full bow of the ship was revealed. Unfortunately that day there were no public tours, after having snapped a couple of pictures I met a crew member named Lisa. Having explained my fondness for the Anastasis, she was so kind to let me onboard for a tour as her personal guest. I was delighted to board the ship again after two years and as I walked up the walkway I loaded a new film inside my camera. At the entrance I was given a special badge and the tour could start.

Last time I boarded the ship in Amsterdam I was given a public tour in a large group. I got a lot of information about Mercy Ships, their mission, how they operate (also literally) and about all the work Anastasis and the volunteers do. I only missed the stories about everyday life of the crew and volunteers onboard the ship, luckily this aspect of the ship was revealed by the tour Lisa had given me.

Below you can see some of the pictures I took of Anastasis exterior and interior, the numbered pictures have a caption below, by clicking on the thumbnails you can open the enlarged version.

Enjoy!
1- Anastasis docked at the quay in Scheveningen.
2- The crew swimming pool, crently used as a storage the pool is a nice and welcome relaxation area when the ship is sailing in more warmer climates. (this used to be the first class pool and lido)
3- The open promenade, looking forward.
4- A peak inside her engine room, the smell of her Fiat diesel engines hits you as the small hatch towards the engine room is opened.
5- To be mobile on land the Anastasis also caries a variety of cars on her foredeck and motorbikes and bicycles.on her aft decks
6- Original wood carvings from her Victoria days.
7- A wood carving of the Anastasis. Behind the wall is the tank of the outside pool which is located one deck higher.
8- Inside look of a cabin which is shared by three persons.
9- A medical scanner that was donated by a surgeon who served on the ship. The scanner was taken onboard by cutting out the inner bulkheads that lead to the cargo bay. After the scanner was installed the bulkheads where welded back into place.
10- looking upwards from her cargo bay as crew members were loading equipment.
11- Looking forward towards the bridge.
12- Anastasis aft deck. The structure with the spare anchor is the school and day care for the children. The deck is also used for sports, games and dance lessons.
13- An inside look of her bridge. The original telemotor from 1953 is still located on the bridge however it no longer serves in running the ship because more up-to-date machinery was installed.
14- One of the onboard operating areas
15- The entrance towards the central staircase. (note the original wooden carved side panels)
16- The open promenade looking aft. Even though the promenade deck is fully wrapped around the superstructure, for safety reasons it is not aloud to run on the ship.
17- The snack bar located on her aft deck is one of the more favourite spots of the crew members.
18- The presentation area where visitors can learn about and see the work of Mercy Ships.
19- The dentist chair, the most given treatment is the pulling of teeth.
