The Anastasis entered service in 1953 as the Victoria. This cargo/passenger liner sailed for the Italian Lloyd Triestino. In 1978 the organisation Mercy Ships bought the Victoria literally from the scrap yard and renamed her the Anastasis. From that time onwards she has served as a hospital ship.

In 2002 the Anastasis visited Amsterdam and I had the change to take a look onboard the Anastasis and see the good things Mercy Ships offers along her routs. Surprisingly for a ship of that vintage and considering the fact that the last 25 years she has served as a hospital ship, she still has much of her original interiors and wooden wall decorations in place. The aging ship is a time capsule and a diamond in the rough showing a glimpse of a different time.
