Project Queen Victoria is my vision of a contemporary cruise/ passenger ship, it started when I could choose a free design project on my academy. I wanted to create a hybrid between the modern cruise ships and the aesthetics of the old archetype liners. I choose the Cunard Line for its history and thus named the vessel Queen Victoria. (not to confuse with the new Cunarder Queen Victoria which came 3 years after my project) Design wise I captured the essence of speed and the shape of the waves. (See the sketches and elevation link at the top) On her main deck is a retractable roof which you can open and close for weather and climate changes. Around the funnel (the focal point of the ship) is a sport deck, with some tennis courts and shuffleboard games. There is also a deck space in front of the funnel that is a little bit raised from the main deck, here you can do aerobics or a barbeque can be held. On both sides of the funnel are large staircases towards the aft decks. Inspired by staircases from old movies and by the staircases on the Normandie. The general idea behind the open deck spaces is that they have no particular function, they are flexible in usage! One time its a little marketplace to sell tourist souvenirs the next time its a stage for an open air show or an auction. The end result is a sturdy ship that has not lost its elegance and as a form study I made a 40 cm long model (click the thumbnails below to see the enlarged images). In reality she would be about 300 meters in length.
